Spieëlbeeld / Looking Glass
These photographs have been taken in a distorted mirror with minimal post editing, i.e the effects were created and discovered while shooting. As a girl growing up in a patriarchal white afrikaans christian society in South Africa I received countless mirroring that women are less than men. This had quite a lasting and profoundly negative effect on me and how I felt about being female. We are bombarded by confusing images of what women are suppose to look like, be like etc. As a result, I become curious about how self image, body image and perceptions of the feminine self becomes distorted through what is being mirrored to us in a society that is so obsessed with the female image. A female image that is still mostly seen through a male perspective.
